About Marwari College, Ranchi
Established in 1963 by the Marwari Shiksha Trust, Marwari College, Ranchi was founded with the vision of providing quality higher education to young and promising students, particularly those belonging to tribal, underprivileged and marginalized sections of society. Over the decades, the college has evolved into one of the prominent institutions of higher education in Jharkhand, with a strong commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity and holistic development.
The establishment and growth of Marwari College owe much to the dedicated efforts of Late Ganga Prasad Budhia, who played a pivotal role in bringing the institution into existence and served as the first President of its Governing Body. The college began its academic journey with a modest strength of 30 students in Pre-University classes, 76 students in B.Com. and 64 students in B.A. The classes were initially conducted in the evening at Marwari School, Pustak Path, near Shaheed Chowk, Ranchi, under the leadership of its first Principal, Sri B. N. Chaubey.
As the number of students grew rapidly, the college expanded its academic facilities. In July 1967, a separate wing for women students was established, marking an important step towards promoting wider access to higher education.
Marwari College has steadily progressed through various milestones of academic development and institutional recognition. The college was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, in 1968, establishing its position within the national higher education framework. In 1980, the college became a constituent unit of Ranchi University under the Government of Jharkhand.
The college received its first NAAC accreditation in May 2004, securing a B++ grade with 80.65 points under the then-prevailing grading and scoring system. Subsequently, the college was granted Autonomous Status by the UGC, New Delhi, for the period 2009–2015. In recognition of its academic potential and institutional development, Marwari College received the prestigious “Potential for Excellence” award from the UGC in December 2010.
Continuing its journey of quality enhancement, the college underwent its second cycle of NAAC accreditation in September 2011, securing a B grade with a CGPA of 2.85 under the revised grading system.
Today, Marwari College, Ranchi continues its legacy as an institution dedicated to providing accessible and quality higher education. The college offers a range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate regular programmes, along with job-oriented Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes designed to equip students with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies for higher studies and professional careers.
With its rich heritage, academic achievements and commitment to student development, Marwari College continues to serve as an important centre of learning in Jharkhand, nurturing young minds and preparing them to contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
